EDUCATION

School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois, Bachelor of Fine Arts, 1988.

International Off-Campus Studies Program, Madrid, Spain, 1986-1987, assisted the Spanish sculptor Jose Cobo in the preparation and construction of a public monument for Santander, Spain.

John Chambers Studios, Burbank, California, 1982 Employed as a sculptor to assist make-up artist John Chambers. Mr. Chambers received the 1969 Academy Award for Best Make-up in "The Planet of the Apes." Chambers is the recipient of an "Emmy" for his work in "Primal Man" and in 1980 was honored with a star on Hollywood Boulevard.

 

HONORS AND AWARDED COMMISSIONS

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, Washington, DC. Awarded Honorable mention, in a field of a thousand competing for the National Monument on the Mall in Washington, DC.

Montgomery County, "Veterans’ Plaza" Silver Spring, Maryland. Currently under design this memorial is 120 feet by 300 feet and is a design effort with Machado & Silvetti Architects.

ALSACE, Saint Jude Hospital and Medical Center, Monument to Danny Thomas, Memphis, Tennessee. The sculptor is to create a sculpture in honor of Mr. Danny Thomas the founder of Saint Jude Children’s Hospital. The eight-foot sculpture will include Danny Thomas and three children. To be dedicated in fall 2010.

DEDICATED PUBLIC AND CORPORATE COMMISSIONS

Ernest Everett Just Foundation, Ernest Everett Just Middle School, Prince George's County, Maryland. Commissioned to design and sculpt a seven-foot sculpture of the noted African American Biologist who led the field in cell biology. The sculpture is installed in front of the middle school that bears his name.

Grand Rapids Legends Project, Chief Noonday, Grand Rapids, Michigan. Commissioned to create a seven foot bronze figure of the Potawotami Chief as part of an on going project to recognize individuals in Grand Rapids History. Dedicated August, 2010.

Boston Red Sox, The Teammates, for Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts. Commissioned to create four over life-size (7ft-71/2ft.) bronze figures of Ted Williams, Bobby Doerr, Johnny Pesky and Dom DiMaggio. Located outside the B Gate entry to Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. Dedicated June 9, 2010.

Miami Dolphins, A Perfect Moment in Time, Monument to Coach Don Shula and the 1972 Dolphins 17-0, Miami Gardens, Florida. Commissioned to create a ten-foot figural grouping of Coach Don Shula being raised upon the shoulders of two football players (Nick Buoniconti HOF and Al Jenkins) all three players in a seven- scale. The sculpture was installed at the executive office entry to Sun Life Stadium home of the Miami Dolphins. Dedicated prior to the Pro Bowl and Super Bowl festivities January 2010.

The Major Taylor Association Inc., 'Tribute to Marshall “Major” Taylor'. The Major Taylor Association, Inc. in Worcester, Massachusetts awarded this commission. One over life-size bronze figure, two reliefs, one 7 ½ by 10 feet and one 4 by 8 feet in bronze. The other materials include granite and Bluestone. Dedicated May 2008.

Calvert Marine Museum, "The Cradle of Invasion Monument, On Watch” Solomons Island, Maryland. This monument includes an eight-foot figure in bronze of a sailor looking out over the water. Dedicated August 11, 2007

H. Carl Moultrie Courthouse, DC Family Court, “Reach Just a Little Bit Higher”, Judiciary Square, Washington DC. A life-size bronze sculpture of a family of four (mother, father, a son and daughter) along with two glass panels etched with universal quotes about family. This sculpture was installed in the Family Court Lobby. Dedicated February 1, 2007.

Wiley H. Bates Portrait Bust, ACDS Wiley H. Bates High School, Newly named Wiley H. Bates Heritage Park, Annapolis, Maryland. An over life-size portrait bust. The subject opened the first black high school in Anne Arundel County. The portrait is installed in the courtyard of the old school which has been renovated for reuse as the new Boys and Girls club and the Retirement Home. Dedicated September 2006.

Thurgood Marshall Portrait Bust, BWI Thurgood Marshall International Airport, Baltimore, Maryland. An over life-size portrait bust commissioned by the Airport, through the State of Maryland, to be a part of a permanent exhibit in the newly named airport. Dedicated June 6 2006.

University of Maryland Baltimore County, “A Tribute to Walter Sondheim”, Baltimore Maryland. A life-size figure of Walter Sondheim, Sondheim was the president of the Baltimore School Board in 1954 and immediately moved to desegregate the Baltimore Schools by the fall term. He has served as a civic leader for over 50 years in Baltimore and was instrumental in the redevelopment and revitalization of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. Collaborating with Miles Barnard ASLA. Dedicated in the Spring of 2005.

Vandenberg Memorial Committee, "The Senator Arthur Vandenberg Memorial", Grand Rapids, Michigan. This plaza features a nine-foot figure of the late Senator and incorporates his words and lists his achievements and contributions to our nation and the world. Senator Vandenberg had an active role in the founding of NATO, the United Nations and played a Leadership role in the approval of the Marshall Plan. Dedicated Spring of 2005.

Norfolk Collegiate Lower School, “A Boy and His Book”, Norfolk, Virginia. A life-size sculpture of an eight-year-old boy reading a book. The figure is seated on a brick bench and graces the entry to the school. Dedicated 2004.

Nolan Ryan Museum, “Nolan Ryan”, Alvin, Texas. A Seven and a half foot figure of the Legendary Baseball Pitcher stands in front of the museum in Alvin. At the request of Mr. Ryan, Mendez created a smaller version of the sculpture that he did for the Ballpark in Arlington, Texas. 2003.

City of Alexandria, "Captain Rocky Versace Plaza and Vietnam Veterans Memorial", Alexandria, Virginia. Three life-size bronze figures with a plaza 66 feet in diameter surrounded by a limestone exedra bench. This plaza and sculpture was dedicated in July 2002.

United States Navy Memorial Foundation, United States Navy Memorial, Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, D.C. Engineer Duty Officers bronze relief 35" x 37". Installed 2001

Canal Place, C&O Canal Commemorative Monument. Cumberland, Maryland. Life-size bronze mule and boy with a granite fountain. Installed 2000

Shanti Fund “The Mohandas K. Gandhi Memorial” H. Lee Dennison County Office Building Suffolk County Long Island, New York. Over Life-size bronze figure placed in the center of a square plaza. The figure is complete the plaza is under construction.

Warwick Public Library, “The Warwick Quahogger, A Days Catch” Warwick, Rhode Island. A life-size bronze figure with his tools of trade and a Labrador retriever. The design includes a granite fountain twenty-four feet wide by sixteen feet front to back. Dedicated 1998.

American Business Women's Association, Portrait of Hilary F. Bufton National Headquarters, Kansas City, Missouri. Bronze portrait bust. Dedicated 1998.

Norfolk Collegiate High School “Going to School" Norfolk, Virginia. Life-size bronze figure of an adolescent with a book bag. Dedicated 1998.

The Texas Rangers Baseball Club "Monuments to Nolan Ryan and Mayor Tom Vandergriff" The Ball Park, Arlington, Texas. Nolan Ryan's bronze figure is 8 feet tall Mayor Vandergriff is 7'3" tall. Dedicated 1997.

The State of Maryland Governor's Commission, Thurgood Marshall Memorial "Equal Justice Under Law” State House Grounds, Annapolis, Maryland. A heroic figure of the Supreme Court Justice on a pedestal and three life-size bronze figures seated on granite benches. In collaboration with James Urban, ASLA the sculptor designed the 50' x 60' plaza with the limestone colonnade. Dedicated 1996.

Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters, “You Can Fly” Norfolk, Virginia Five life-size bronze children surrounded by a circular brick path inscribed with a quote from Peter Pan. Dedicated 1995.

Friends of Annmarie Gardens “A Tribute to the Oyster Tonger” Calvert County, Maryland A seven and a half-foot bronze figure stands on the bow of a twenty-foot granite boat. The figure and boat are in the center of a 50-foot diameter cobblestone lined basin. Dedicated 1994.

Advocates for Homeless Families, Inc. “The Embrace” Frederick, Maryland Cast stone bas-relief sculpture 18" x 24". The relief is presented annually to a generous group, supporting the mission of Advocates. 1991

Mable R. Walter Arboretum Endowment Campaign "Student Reading" Hagerstown Community College, Hagerstown, Maryland. Half life-size figure on a limestone pedestal. 1993.

Department of the Interior, National Parks Service, Pearl Harbor Remembrance Memorial Visitors Center, "Isle of Oahu" Oahu, Hawaii A bronze topography map of the isle of Oahu (four by five feet). Used by Pearl Harbor survivors to describe the attack on Pearl Harbor. Dedicated 1992.

Mercersburg Academy "The Erin Carey Memorial Garden", Mercersburg, Pennsylvania A half life-size figure on a limestone pedestal in the center of a twenty-foot diameter Bluestone plaza. Dedicated 1992.

The United States Navy Memorial Foundation "Medical Corps & Navy Exploration, the Wilke's Expedition" United States Navy Memorial, Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, D.C. Two bronze reliefs each 35 by 37inches. Dedicated 1992.

United States Mint, United States Treasury Department, Washington D.C The Treasury Department commissioned eight designs for coins commemorating Mount Rushmore and the U.S.O. National

Multiple Sclerosis: Chicago/Northern Illinois Chapter “Bronze Sculpture Awards” & “Honorary Presentation” Chicago, Illinois. Designed two variations on the award and cast and presented eight to the client. Dedicated 1988.

James S. Savage Bronze Relief Memorial Commissioned by the Valparaiso University - School of Law Valparaiso, Indiana The Law School commissioned this bronze bas-relief portrait of Professor James Savage. Installed in 1986.

 

TEACHING AND LECTURING EXPERIENCE

2008- Fall Part time, Sculpture Instructor at Hood College, Frederick, Maryland. Teaching Figurative Sculpture in the graduate department.

1991-92 Part time, Sculpture Instructor at Montgomery College, Rockville, Maryland. Teaching traditional portrait sculpture. 1989 Rodin Museum Lecture, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A two and a half-hour lecture on Rodin discussing historical developments during the artist's life, his contributions to Modernism, and the techniques he used in creating his works.

1989 Guest lecturer, Hagerstown Leadership Council. Artists talk.
